ENFIELD – Michael S. Smith (Mike), age 75, surrounded by a band of angels and taken to the side of Jesus on Sunday, April 6, 2025. Born in Halifax County, NC on February 16, 1950, he was the son of the late Norwood Smith and Annie Rue King Smith.   He was also preceded in death by his granddaughter, Callie Smith; grandmother, Bettie Ruth Smith; uncles, Bill Smith and Wayne Smith; his best friend and little buddy, Diesel.

Michael was a familiar and respected figure in the local racing community, where his skill and competitive spirit behind the wheel of his racecar were well known. He embraced the camaraderie of the track and the challenge of each race. When not on the track, Michael was an avid fisherman, and could often be found on the water, whether a pond or river, but the beach/ocean held a special place in his heart.

Michael’s curiosity extended beyond the present day. He was a keen historian, finding fascination in the stories of the past. His love for history was intertwined with his unique hobby of collecting arrowheads, each find connecting him to the land and its earliest inhabitants.

A true craftsman, Michael possessed an incredible ability to weld and build anything he set his mind to. His hands were skilled, and his ingenuity knew no bounds. Whether it was fixing a car, or creating something entirely new, he approached every project with dedication and pride.

Adding another layer to his rich tapestry of interests was his love for the spirited sounds of bluegrass music. The lively melodies and heartfelt lyrics resonated deeply with his soul.

He had a special love for animals, but his loyal canine companion, Diesel, held a special place in his heart, as he was a constant source of unwavering love and companionship before Diesel’s passing. Family was the cornerstone of Michael’s life, and he cherished every moment spent with his loved ones. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, always offering his support, his laughter, and his unwavering love. He was deeply loved and will be dearly missed by all that knew and loved him.

Michael is survived by his wife of 42 years, Kay Smith; sons, Irving Smith (Cynthia), Michael Warren (Penny); daughter, Mary Elizabeth Smith; grandchildren, Eason Warren, Payton Warren, Layla Smith, Hadley Lewis, Brayden Lewis; brother, Norwood Hank Smith (Mary).
