Born in: Edgecombe County, North Carolina
Resided in: Nash County, North Carolina

ROCKY MOUNT – William “Steve” Keene “Nippy”, age 73, passed away on Wednesday, July 30, 2025.  Born in Edgecombe County, NC on April 9, 1952, he was the son of the late William Rawls Keene. Steve was also preceded in death by his sister, Rose Earline Keene.

Born and raised in Tarboro, Steve was a true athlete, excelling in both football and basketball at Tarboro High School. Beyond the sports field, he found immense joy in the outdoors. He was an avid hiker, always seeking new trails to explore and to admire. His passion for nature extended to a profound appreciation for birds, whose songs and flights brought him endless delight.

After graduating from NC State in Raleigh, Steve remained a devoted fan, cheering on his beloved Wolfpack with an unwavering enthusiasm that was truly infectious. He embraced every day with zest, finding happiness in simple pleasures like riding his bicycle through scenic routes. His love for life was complemented by his deep appreciation for music, especially the revolutionary sounds of Jimi Hendrix, whose guitar riffs often provided the soundtrack to his adventures.

A faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church in Raleigh, Steve lived a life guided by kindness and compassion. He was a dedicated and loving son, always prioritizing his family and offering unwavering support. His warm smile, adventurous spirit, and genuine love for the world around him will be profoundly missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Steve’s legacy will live on in the rustling leaves, the soaring birds, and the echo of a guitar solo — reminders of a life lived fully and beautifully.

Steve is survived by his daughters, Emily Creek (Zach), and Olivia Keene; his grandchildren, Grayson Creek, and Madeline Creek; his mother, Ruby Earline Owens; and his former wife, Pamela Keene.

A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Cobb Memorial Presbyterian Church 1101 Sunset Ave. Tarboro, NC 27886 with Pastor Steve Herring officiating. Burial will follow the service.
