NASHVILLE – DeWilda Womble Joyner, age 94, passed away on Saturday, January 3, 2026. Born in Nash County, NC on February 9, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Curtis Biscoe Womble and Lucille Moore Womble. She was also preceded in death by her loving husband, Alton F. Joyner; her son, Van Curtis Joyner; her sister, Martha Ann Waters; and her brother, Curtis Keith Womble.
DeWilda was a woman whose life was marked by dedication, kindness, and a lifelong love of both sports and service to others. A proud athlete in her youth, she played basketball for Nashville High School, an experience that shaped her strong work ethic and team spirit. That love of the game stayed with her throughout her life, especially when it came to cheering on her beloved UNC Tar Heels, whom she faithfully followed and supported.
DeWilda built a successful and respected career as a mortgage loan officer, working for nearly every savings and loan bank in Rocky Mount over the years. Known for her professionalism, patience, and genuine care for people, she took great pride in helping others achieve their financial goals. One of her fondest memories was assisting a young couple in securing their very first home loan—an accomplishment that reflected not only her expertise, but also her heartfelt joy in helping others take meaningful steps forward in life.
She was a devoted member of Sunset Baptist Church until her health declined, finding strength, comfort, and fellowship within her church family. DeWilda will be remembered for her determination, her generous spirit, and the positive impact she made on so many lives through her work, her faith, and her compassion. Her legacy lives on in the homes she helped make possible and in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
DeWilda was a mother to her daughter, Jamie Lynn Moss and husband, Mike, of Nashville; her son, Craig Joyner, and partner Sheryl Sessoms, of Westfield, NC; a grandmother to her grandson, Chandler Moss, and wife Leslie, and granddaughter Brittany Moss (Glover); her great-grandchildren, Jonah Glover, Nolan Glover, Bennett Glover, Ava Grace Moss, and Owen Moss; and her sister-in-law, Gwen Womble.

Jamie and Craig and all the family. Heartfelt prayers for you to receive comfort from our Savior. We grew up together on Paul Street and our mama’s always yelling for us to come home, it was getting dark. We have been blessed to have had our mama’s this long and to be able to nurture to them as they did us ❤️ -
Praying for ya’ll -
My sympathy to the family.
