ROCKY MOUNT – Juanita Mills Bowden, age 97, passed away on Sunday, January 18, 2026. Born in Nash County, NC on January 8, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Richard Terry Mills and Ruby Ayers Mills. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Eugene Bowden, three sisters, five brothers, sons- in- law, Buck Briley and Neil Stephen Carignan, Sr.

Juanita was a woman whose life was marked by faith, service, and a genuine love for people. A longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church, she faithfully served her church family for many years until her health no longer allowed her to do so. One of her greatest joys was teaching Sunday School, where she shared her love for God and His Word with warmth, patience, and sincerity.

Juanita was truly a people person. She never met a stranger and had a natural gift for making others feel welcome, valued, and cared for. Her kindness and friendly spirit left a lasting impression on everyone she met.

Alongside her beloved husband, Juanita helped start Bowden Electric in Rocky Mount. Together, they built not only a successful business but also a reputation for honesty, hard work, and service to the community. For many years, they were proud to serve the people of Rocky Mount, forming relationships that went far beyond business.

Her faith was the foundation of her life. Juanita loved reading her Bible and spent countless hours studying Scripture and reading Christian books, always seeking to grow deeper in her walk with the Lord. Her faith was not only something she spoke about, but something she lived out daily through her actions and love for others.

Juanita will be remembered for her unwavering faith, her servant’s heart, and her deep love for people. Her life was a testimony of quiet strength, compassion, and devotion, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Juanita is survived by her daughters, Charlotte Briley of Rocky Mount, NC, Sharon Carignan of Manteo, NC; sons, David Bowden and wife Peggy of Rocky Mount, NC, and Richard Bowden and wife Brenda of Rocky Mount, NC; grandchildren, Kevin Bowden of Forney, TX, Craig Bowden, David R. Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Mrs. Bowden was a sweet woman and had the sweetest smile. I don’t think she ever met a stranger. Heaven has gained an angel.

  2. Charlotte, Sharon, David, Richard and all the Bowden Family,
I have known your sweet mother for all of my life, and I can honestly say that my life is far better for having her in it. As a little girl and into my teenage years, I remember coming home from school on Thursdays and seeing your dad waiting patiently while my mom fixed her hair. I’d stop to speak to Mr. Bowden first, then make my way into my mom’s shop for that much‑needed, special Mrs. Bowden hug and her warm “I love you so much.”

As I grew up, got married, and eventually moved away to Chicago, I always made sure to call on the days I knew she’d be at the shop so I could say hello and tell her I loved her. In fact, the last time she got her hair done, I called and was able to speak with her and see her—and it absolutely made my day.

I will forever cherish every moment I spent with her talking about faith, Jesus, and God. She was a good and Godly woman, and I am truly blessed to have known her.

  3. Ms Bowden was a kind a beautiful lady. I didn’t know her well, but every time I was with her she made my heart smile. I know she will be greatly missed. My deepest condolences to her family.

  4. I grew up at Calvary with this wonderful lady and her family. My prayers are with David, Ricky and Charlotte.
    Rev. Dal and Jeannette Coppedge

  5. Our thoughts and prayers are with Rick and the family. May God walk with you all through this trying journey.

  6. Mrs. Bowden is one of my all-time favorite people. She always made me feel loved and special when I saw her at Calvary Church or anywhere else. There are very few people that have such a lasting impact on my life as Mrs. Juanita Bowden. Love to her family she is a forever treasure.

  7. So very sorry for your loss.Ray respected and thought the world of her and all of you. Prayers for the days ahead.
