Barbara G. Burgess

NASHVILLE - Barbara Gurganus Burgess, age 81, passed away on Sunday, August 29, 2021. Born in Nash County, NC on April 1, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Alex Gurganus and Linda Whitley Gurganus. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James "Tip" Alton Burgess; her sisters, Shirley Gurganus Braswell, and Rose Marie Edwards; and her brothers, Cecil Gurganus, Milton "Buster" Gurganus, McDonald Gurganus, and Robert Earl Gurganus. Barbara loved working with her husband Tip at Rocky Mount Machine Works for many years. She enjoyed traveling and spending her down time at the beach or the mountains. She was known for being very well dressed. Above all, Barbara's most cherished memories will be those spent with her family. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend and will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved her, but her loving spirit will never be forgotten as she was everything to her family. Barbara is survived by her son, James "Tip" Alton Burgess, II, of Greenville; her step-daughters, Patricia B. Belton, of Wilmington, Grey B. Christian, of Greensboro, and Robin B. Congleton and husband, Ed, of Greenville; her grandchildren, James Burgess, III, and Addie Burgess, of Stokes; her sister, Ethel Gurganus Farmer; and many nieces and nephews. A Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, September 2, 2021 at 11:00 AM at Pineview Cemetery with Rev. Carlton Cockrell officiating. A visitation with the family will follow the service at the graveside. Flowers are welcome.
