Charles Exum Hunter

Mr. Charles Exum “Papa” Hunter Sr., 76 the youngest child of William Exum and Nannie Bell Hunter, was born at home in Whitakers and lived in the same home his entire life. Charles passed away on Tuesday, March 8th, 2016 surrounded by family. Charles graduated from Whitakers High School in 1957 and until his death enjoyed lunches with his classmates. He made lifelong friends at every place he worked. His places of employment were Carters Exxon, Enfield Red White, Turner “Toms” Distributing Co., Town of Whitakers, Rocky Mount Undergarment and Glenot Fabrics of Tarboro. He was a member of the Army National Guard of NC from 1960-1966. Charles was a member of the Whitakers Volunteer Fire Department from 1967 until retiring in 1994. He served as assistant chief from 1979-1982 and fire chief from 1983-1991. He was vice-president from 1983-1984 and president from 1984-1985 of the Nash County Fire Rescue Association. Charles accepted the Lord as his Savior on February 14, 1999 and was baptized on October 10, 1999 at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Enfield, NC. He was proceeded in death by his loving wife Lela Cooke Hunter of 50 years, 4 Months and 7 days, his oldest son Charles E. Hunter Jr. and his siblings, Billy Hunter, Margaret Cooke, “Shorty” Hunter, Grace Sullivan, “Kat” Williams and Ruth Futrell. He is survived by his children Felicia Hunter, William Hunter and Wife Kim, daughter in-law Renee Hunter and sister Sarah Cooke. He is also survived by two grandchildren Doug and Amber Hunter, and his loving baby Ragamuffin, Uncle “Charlie” is survived by many loving nieces and nephews. A Visitation will be Friday at Johnson Funeral Home from 6-8 PM and the Funeral will be at Johnson Funeral Home Saturday at 1:30 PM with burial to follow at the Hunter Family Cemetery Whitakers NC.
