Frances Irene Proctor Batts

Irene Proctor Batts, 84, passed away on Monday, February 10, 2020 due to complications with cancer. She was born on January 3, 1936 in Edgecombe County to the late George Proctor, Sr. and Minnie Lee Benson Proctor. Irene was a 1954 graduate of West Edgecombe High School. She was a lifelong member of West Edgecombe Baptist Church and was employed 15 years as its 1st church secretary. She also served as a Sunday School teacher and Library Director. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and great-aunt. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Kenneth Batts. In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by her brother, George "Bubber" Proctor, Jr. She leaves behind to cherish her memory one son, Jeffrey Batts and wife, Phillis of Chester, Virginia; one daughter, Jill Batts Pridgen and husband, Brandon of Fredericksburg, Virginia; one brother, Billy Proctor of Rocky Mount; two sisters, Virginia Proctor Turner and Ellen Proctor Calhoun, both of Rocky Mount; two grandsons, Chaston Pridgen and Brevan Pridgen; one great granddaughter, Bella Gretkowski and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. A visitation will be held on Sunday, February 16, 2020 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Johnson Funeral Home with the funeral service following at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Johnson Funeral Home with Reverend Allen Mills officiating. A private graveside services for family only will follow at the Battleboro Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the Memorial Fund at West Edgecombe Baptist Church or to the American Cancer Society.
