Britt Gifford went peacefully to his eternal rest on Wednesday, March 14, 2018. The son of the late Jonathan and Addie Davis Gifford, he was born October 8, 1927 in Wilson County. He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Bailey Gifford and his sister, Lois Gifford Brown of Bailey, NC.
He is survived by his wife Barbara Edwards Gifford of the home; children Avery Gifford and Wife Lydia of Rocky Mount, Jeanell Jones and husband Bob of Enfield, Emily Lou Brown of Rocky Mount, Beverly OBerry and husband Speedy of Nashville, and Larry Flowers and wife Belinda of Battleboro; grandchildren Brian Jones and wife Gayle of Whitakers, Army Specialist Jonathan Boyd Gifford and wife Kielee of Ft. Sill, Lawton, Oklahoma, Megan Flowers of Raleigh, and Sarah OBerry of Nashville; great-granddaughter Avery Blake Gifford of Ft. Sill, Lawton, Oklahoma; sister
Ruth Morgan and husband James of Farmville, NC; nephews Johnny Brown and wife Miriam of New Bern and David Brown and wife Ann of Bailey, and special friend Jarvis Batchelor of Rocky Mount. Britt loved and was loved by each member of his family.
Britt was the manager of Thomas St. Shell in Rocky Mount for over 40 years. He enjoyed his work as an auto mechanic, especially the feeling that he had helped the customers who came into the station. He enjoyed food, both eating and cooking it. His specialty was frying hoecake cornbread for which his reputation spread far and wide. Until recently, he prepared this delicacy at least once a day.
He was a longstanding member of Shenandoah Baptist Church in Rocky Mount, where visitation will be held from 2:00 to 3:00, Sunday, March 18, with the funeral service at 3:00 and interment at Rocky Mount Memorial Park following.
The family would like to express special thanks to the staff of Autumn Care in Nashville for their loving care and treatment during our three week stay with them.
