ROCKY MOUNT - Lindwood “Ray” Joyner, age 78, passed away on Friday, February 4, 2022. Born in Nash County, NC on January 15, 1944, he was the son of the late Percy Lindwood Joyner and Ethel Winstead Joyner. He was also preceded in death by his first wife of 40 years, Barbara Pridgen Joyner, and his second wife, Patsy Vick Joyner; his grandson, Hudson Randolph Joyner; his brothers, Donald Edward Joyner and Jimmie Lee Joyner; and his sister-in-law, Nancy Lancaster Joyner.
Ray spent his childhood playing and working on the cherished family farm in West Mount. A graduate of Benvenue High school, Ray went on to Wilson Tech. for mechanical engineering. He began his career with CSX Railroad as a carpenter and an upholsterer for 10 years and retired from Carolina Steel after 29 years of service as a welder. A member of the United States National Guard, he knew what it meant to be a man of service. Ray loved devoting his time and efforts to giving back to his community and helping others. He served on several committees with Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, assisted community Ruritan clubs and volunteered with Meals on Wheels providing food for those in need. One of his greatest passions was his love and joy for Purple Martins. He spent many years growing his own gourds, providing housing, and care for several colonies. Ray could be found almost every morning enjoying his morning coffee and breakfast at Oak Level Caf, catching up with friends, telling stories or sharing a good joke to put a smile on someone's face. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and uncle. He leaves behind a legacy of friends and family that will miss him dearly.
Ray is survived by his daughter, Robin Lynn Joyner (Chris Narron), of Rocky Mount; his son, Bryan Ray Joyner of Davidson; his grandchildren, Joshua Colby Joyner, Emerson Rae Joyner, and Claire Grace Joyner; and many nieces and nephews, whom he considered to be his second children.
