Mary "Kay" Alford Rowland

May 19, 1944 ~ August 4, 2020

YOUNGSVILLE - Mary “Kay” Alford Rowland moved to her heavenly home on Tuesday, August 4, 2020. Born May 19, 1944 to Roscoe Calvin Alford and Kitty Whitaker Alford, Kay spent her early years in Wendell, NC, before moving to Rocky Mount, NC, and graduating from Rocky Mount Senior High School. She married Henry Thaxton Rowland III on December 29, 1962 and was a loving mother to her six children and five grandchildren. Kay shared her love of sewing, decorating, and baking throughout her community and the world. Working in the sewing industry her entire life, she started at Summergrade Textiles, then went to work with Daughtridge Interiors. She then formed Kittys Creations with her mother, Kitty Alford. Her sewing masterpieces touched countless lives and can still be found in various homes and businesses in the Rocky Mount area, and around the country. Kittys Creations will continue with her daughter, Donna Amerson. She poured her heart into her work with the Englewood Baptist Church Drama and Music Ministry, designing and creating the costumes while participating in the choir as well. Children of all ages have been blessed by the many handmaid gifts distributed by Samaritans Purse and the Englewood Baptist Church Missions programs. In the 1970s she took a cake decorating class as a hobby that lead to a successful catering and cake decorating business. Her beautiful, delicious, one of a kind cakes, and expert event planning ensured many weddings and affairs went off without a hitch. Kay came to know her Lord at an early age, and as young woman devoted her life to her Lord. She was passionate about sharing Gods word throughout her community and the world through her missions at both North Rocky Mount Baptist Church, and Englewood Baptist Church. She was a bright example of a true, godly, strong woman. Her faith was the driving force in her life and her life verse was Philippians 4:13 - “I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.” Kay is preceded in death by her father, Roscoe Alford, mother, Kitty Alford, her husband, Henry Rowland III, son, Henry Rowland IV, and daughter, Yvonne “Sissy” Rowland Whitley. She is survived by her sister, Barbara Alford Holland of Wake Forest, N.C., children: Donna Rowland Amerson (Thomas Allen) of Youngsville, N.C. Theresa Rowland Ellis (Bob) of Wilmington, N.C., Phillip Rowland (Heather) of Hampstead, N.C. and Elizabeth Rowland of Raleigh, NC, and grandchildren: Diana Amerson, Ashley Rowland, Ethan Rowland, Andrew Amerson, and Megan Rowland. 1. Wonderful Christian lady and a friend. Will be sorely missed. Great mother friend and example of what a true Christian is. In her final resting place now with her Lord

  2. So sorry to hear of your loss. What a celebration going on in heaven. She was truly one of God’s warriors and shared the good news wherever she went. We go back in 70”s to N.Rocky Mt. Baptist Church with Mrs.Kitty and rest of your family. Philip, we wanted to let you know how sorry we are for your loss ,and how much we loved all the family . We had the pleasure of also joining your mom at Englewood Baptist. Randolph enjoyed working with her and Meals on Wheels. She was always working and involved in doing for others. What a legacy to leave for her Savior. Our prayers are with you and the family. Hope and Randolph Lewis

  3. It was my honor and privilege to call Kay my Mother-in-law. She welcomed me into her home and family as if I been born into the family. She was very supportive of my military service and made sure that I knew how proud she was. She always had a big hug waiting for me and I could always count on some delicious collards waiting for me on those very special holidays. Through is, she made all holidays and birthdays special and she remembered them all and tried her best to make sure that you felt a true part of the family. Her generosity and kindness to others was heartfelt and set the example for others around her. She was a strong woman that not only believed in but lived her faith. It was clear how she loved Christ her savior. So as we all say goodbye, I take great comfort in knowing that she is filled with joy and everlasting comfort. To her children, thanks for including me in a wonderful family and know that your mother was and is loved by so many. I will miss her but she will forever be a part of my holiday memories including those celebrations and picnics under the giant tree out back.

  4. Kay wore lots of hats, literally and figuratively. She will be rewarded for using her gifts and talents for others and as unto the Lord. She was gotten away with her surprise 75th birthday party. They decorated while I was at Sunday School and at church . I had no idea, she said. She was so happy. Great servant. Great example for us. Rest on Kay. Get your reward my friend.

  5. Many fond memories of Kay and her beautiful family from North Rocky Mount Baptist Church. She was, indeed, an amazing woman and a Godly woman. May you rest in knowing Kay has received her crowns in glory.

  6. Oh how I did love Mrs Kay! Not only did she help out with her sewing talent for the Weekday Education ministry at church, made so many flags for our church, but she did alterations for Tara’s prom gowns and would not accept compensation. I’ll never forget that. She was so sweet and so giving. Heaven is sweeter because Mrs Kay is there probably making new flags for Jesus!!!

  7. God be with her loving family and dedicated friends. May you cherish precious memories of good times and her love til you meet in heaven. In Christian sympathy, Tom and Martha Lancaster Barnes
