Wiley Willard Walters, age 87, passed away on March 14, 2016 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.
Born on September 22, 1928, in Edgecombe County, he was known as Buck to friends and family. He later moved to Virginia, where he met and fell in love with Mary Ray. They were married in 1950 following a two-week courtship. After they moved back to Rocky Mount in 1966, he dedicated his life to Jehovah and was a longtime member of the Goldrock congregation of Jehovahs Witnesses. Buck and Marys union lasted nearly sixty-one years until her death in 2011. During that time, they were blessed with three children, Brenda, Jerry, and Karen. Family was a priority to Buck, and he was very proud and protective of his children.
Buck worked for over thirty years as produce manager for Whites Supermarket. After he retired, he enjoyed fishing and tending to his garden. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and considered it a wonderful privilege to live long enough to experience the joy of great-grandchildren and even one great-great-grandchild. He also loved to cook, especially his ham, sausage, collards, and mustard greens. His house was frequently filled with one of those aromas.
Buck was loved by many and will be missed very much. The family will hold a private burial.
He is survived by daughter Brenda Weeks and husband Tim of Spring Hope, daughter Karen Edwards and husband Robert of Nashville, son Jerry Walters and wife Gwen of Littleton, seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and sister Peggy Crump of Creswell. He was predeceased by his sister June Edens of Manteo.
