Dallas Lorenza Barnes

Rocky Mount - Dallas Lorenza Barnes passed away on Saturday, March 7, 2020 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina after a prolonged battle with cancer. He was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina on April 27, 1933 to Hettie Mozelle Barnes and Nathaniel Clyde Barnes. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 25 years, Lillie Wood Barnes of the home. He was survived by 2 brothers and 2 sisters, Tommie Barnes of Sims, N.C. J.H. Harrison of Texas, Madora Moyer of Riverview, Florida and Mamie Baines of Colorado and many loving nieces and nephews. He is also survived by a very loving caretaker of 15 years Mrs. Mary Coleman, a very loving tenant/friend Ms. Denise Conyers and a very dear friend and driver Mr. Willie Bennett ("Juggie") Upon leaving school, he enlisted in the National Guard on July 12, 1949. He then joined the Army on May 9, 1950 and served 3 years until he was honorably discharged on October 26, 1953. Dallas re-enlisted on October 27, 1953 and served another 3 years before being honorably discharged on October 26, 1956 and then reenlisted on October 27, 1956 until his retirement on September 11, 1964 for temporary physical disability. While on active duty in the US Army Dallas attained the rank of SGT (E-5) prior to retirement his military service included expert (Rifle) an Automotive repairman. Dallas was also an ex-POW from Korean War, after retiring from the U.S. Post Office where he remained for 22 years until his retirement. Barnes was a member of Old Carriage Road Baptist Church and served as a Deacon for many years until his health failed. He was an inspiration to all who had the pleasure of meeting his acquaintance. Dallas always had a joke to tell or his years as a POW. Dallas Volunteered driving the VA van to Durham for years and he was also the coordinator to make sure everyone got to their doctor appointment at the VA. He loved to talk about his favorite baseball team, the Washington Nationals. Dallas had a routine and a schedule that he stuck by going out for breakfast at Hardee's every Friday and the Highway Dinner where he ate dinner and communicated with everyone. He gets his hair cut the first Wednesday of each month. We will all miss him greatly, but none as much as his dear caregiver, Mary. The family will be receiving friends at the home of Dallas 811 Branch Street Rocky Mount, NC. A visitation will be held on Thursday, March 12, 2020 from 10:30 AM to 11:00 AM at Old Carriage Road Baptist Church, 1060 North Old Carriage Road, Rocky Mount, NC 27804 with the funeral service following at 11:00 AM with Pastor William Harper officiating. Burial will follow at Pineview Cemetery.
