ROCKY MOUNT – David Lawrence Whitby, age 78, passed away on Saturday, February 8, 2025.  Born in Washington, DC on January 11, 1947, but moved to Alexandria, VA with his parents as a young child. He was the son of the late William David Whitby and Helen Wayman Hepburn.

David graduated from Campbell College now University in 1970 and began a 30-year career in education in Nash County, moving to the Nash Rocky Mount School System after he earned a master’s degree in counseling at East Carolina University. He had a great love for NC State sports, especially football and could usually be found dressed in a red NC State shirt and baseball cap. David was taken from us very suddenly and unexpectedly. David was a good man, a great father and husband and a good friend to many in the Rocky Mount area. David leaves behind a tremendous legacy of life, love, and laughter.

David is survived by his wife of 54 years, Edith Coggin Whitby of the home and their daughter Megan Coggin Whitby of Chapel Hill. David is also survived by beloved cousins and his best friend Mark Williams.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at David’s home 3705 Westridge Circle Drive Rocky Mount, NC 27804 on Sunday, February 16, 2025, from 2:00 PM till 5:00 PM.

  1. Uncle David, I know it has been some years since we have seen each other, Lj still remembers the farm and was lucky enough to make his own memories from the visit we had. Every year when our birthdays came around you were one of the first people to wish Happy Birthday on Facebook! You have cheered on my boys as well as me and numerous times over the years though social media and for that I thank you. Take your rest Uncle David, you have earned it and will truly be missed!!   3. Edith, David was a role model and mentor for me during a part of my counselor internship at Parker School.
    He had a great sense of humor and working with him was a good experience. I am so sorry for your loss. You and Megan are in my thoughts and prayers. Hopefully, special memories will replace some of the sadness you now feel. God Bless.

  4. Dear Edith. I am so so sorry to read this. I see it was unexpected. I could not imagine being in your shoes. In the time I worked for you and David, you both were so kind to me. I’ve often thought of you both since then. Please cherish the great memories. Know that my heart is with you and you are in my every prayer.
