WHITAKERS – James K. Hunter, age 78, passed away on Monday, November 11, 2024. Born in Lake County, Florida on October 30, 1946, he was the son of the late Herbert Wilkins and Mildred Hunter Wilkins. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Sandra Barrett Hunter and brother, David Summersill.
James proudly served his Country in the United States Army for 23 years, including the Vietnam War. James enjoyed working outside landscaping his yards, and loved planting his trees and shrubs. James also had his pilot’s license, and he flew a Cessna Piper. He flew from the old Rocky Mount airport, often flying to Hatteras to fish, and enjoyed flying to Florida to visit his parents. James enjoyed fishing trips with his son, including Topsail Beach, the Bogue Inlet Pier at Emerald Isle Beach. In addition to their many fishing trips, James also loved riding with Michael on his 18-wheeler on road trips. Most of all James loved his family very much, as his family was his everything and he will be missed by all that knew and loved him.
James is survived by his son, Michael Hunter (Ginny); grandchild, Michelle Powell (Chris); and great grandchild, Christian Powell.
