John D Elms

RED OAK – John D. Elms, age 66, passed away on Tuesday, September 29, 2026. Born in Westchester, NY on October 12, 1959, he was the son of the late Charles Daniel Elms and Doris Bowman Elms. He was also preceded in death by his son, Christopher Elms.

John was a devoted man of faith, a skilled pilot, and a friend to all. Before retiring, he enjoyed a rewarding career as a corporate pilot, flying a Cessna Citation and Canadair Challenger. In his younger days, John owned and flew a Cessna 150 taildragger, proudly believing that “real men flew taildraggers.” John was incredibly handy and could fix nearly anything, from household projects and automobiles to electronics. He was friendly, outgoing, and never met a stranger. He had a special gift for making people feel noticed, valued, and loved. Easygoing and kindhearted, he was always willing to help rather than criticize.

John was a long-time active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served a mission for the Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, from 1979–1980.

John will be remembered for his love of flying, generous spirit, faith, and the countless lives he touched. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

John is survived by his wife of 44 years, Julie Cooper Elms; daughter, Jennifer Ralston (Grant); sons, David Elms (Laura Filkins), Michael Elms (Trista), and Alex Elms; grandchildren, Ellie, Piper, Chance, Maverick, Leif, Ben, Jonny, Tommy, and Charlotte; sisters, Diana, Darlene, and stepmom, Donna Elms.

A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at 10:00 AM in the Chapel at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints 3224 Woodlawn Road Rocky Mount, NC  27804 with Bishop Mark Lyons officiating. A visitation will be from 9:00 AM to 9:45 AM prior to the service in the Relief Society Room at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Burial will be on October 10, 2026, at Millville-Nibley Cemetery 310-325 E 100 N, Millville, UT 84326 next to his son Christopher.
