ROCKY MOUNT – John Walter Hickey, III, age 54, passed away on Sunday, July 5, 2026. Born in Bergen County, NJ on December 26, 1971, he was the son of the late John Walter Hickey, II and Margaret Patricia Clifford Hickey.
John passed away, leaving behind a lifetime of memories and a legacy of love, laughter, and adventure. He was happiest surrounded by the beauty of nature, whether he was casting a fishing line, camping beneath the stars, hiking a favorite trail, or simply enjoying the peace of the outdoors.
John had a passion for heavy metal music and could often be found with his favorite songs playing loud. He was also known for his impressive knowledge of obscure history, always ready to share an interesting fact or tell a story that left others both entertained and amazed.
Above all else, John cherished his family. They were the center of his world, and he found his greatest joy in the time he spent with those he loved. He also had a special place in his heart for his beloved dogs, who were constant companions throughout his life.
John will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, his unique sense of humor, his love of learning, and the kindness he shared with those around him. Though he will be deeply missed, his memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
John is survived by his wife of 33 years, Dawn Hubert-Hickey; daughters, Montana Hickey, and Courtney Dye; sister and brothers-in-law, Lisa and Dennis Gillis, Jeanie Hubert, and Joann Morelos; brothers-in-law, Edward Hubert, Robert and Lynn Hubert, and Chris Hubert; a multitude of nieces and nephews, and his fur baby’s, Connie Frances, and Beans Paul.

John worked for me at DHL prior to me moving to another apartment within GSK but we still always spoke and had conversations almost daily. John will be truly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
John was the son of my best friend . He was a good son to his Mom and Dad. We spoke from time to time and it made me happy to know that he made a good life in NC. It makes me sad to see him leave us so early in his life but I know his reunion with John and Patty will be sweet. As I always say about his dad. I will see you on another tide. Rest easy John.
I was so sorry to hear this. John, or JDubya as I called him, was a true friend. During the time that I knew him, we had many long, loud, drunken nights and just as many deep conversations. Like I said, a true friend. I’m sorry we lost touch so long ago, but I will always remember the great times we had, along with Gerst and in later years Dawn. My deepest condolences. Love to all.
