Lonnie David "LD" Driver

September 3, 1923 ~ October 7, 2017

Lonnie David Driver passed away on Saturday, October 7, 2017 at the age of 94. Born in Nash County, NC and spending his life residing near Dortches and Red Oak, he was the son of the late Lonnie David Driver, Sr. and Tempie Bone Driver. He is predeceased by his wife, Melissa (Lib) Driver; his sisters, Lula Bell Boone, Irene Fisher, Marjorie (Margie) McPheron, Kathleen Styers, and Annie Mae Griffin; and his brothers, W.D. Driver, Sr. and Archie Driver. He leaves behind to honor his memory his daughter, Judy Jones; his granddaughter, Natalie Benson; his son-in-law, Carl Benson; and his sister, Nellie Perry. He is survived by many nieces, nephews, and extended family including a special nephew, David Griffin. Treasured friends to L.D. were Les Tippette, Tonya Parker, and Louise Coleman; all of whom cared for and loved L.D. like a family member. Even though L.D. loved all hunting, he was an avid quail and coon hunter; and he was an accomplished gardener. These hobbies garnered him many wonderful visits and lively conversation with friends and strangers from all over calling on his expertise. For scheduling his planting, the Farmers Almanac was a staple and was always handy. He was quick to tell people if they had planted on the wrong phase of the moon, and it was a spirited contest after that to see who could grow the finest vegetables. He enjoyed farming tobacco in his earlier years and was a skilled carpenter through-out his life. L.D. loved building bird and duck boxes, making whirligigs, and tinkering in his workshop trying to make just about anything he set his mind to. He spent many hours helping people with their worn-out well pumps, their appliances, and all things broken. He loved to tell stories, to laugh, and to make other people laugh. The pastime that made him the happiest in his later years was watching any team play baseball, but he was always pulling for the Yankees and the Durham Bulls. L.D. leaves us all with a great lesson. No matter how much he ate or how full he said he was, he always had room for dessert. He enjoyed the small things in life and always made time for play and sharing life. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 10, 2017 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Johnson Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice in memory of L.D. Driver.
