Mattie Griffin Holmes

ROCKY MOUNT - Mattie Griffin Holmes, age 90, passed away on Tuesday, August 3, 2021. Born in Nash County, NC on February 15, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Jesse Martin Griffin and Mattie Estell Forrest Griffin. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Charles Holmes, Sr. Mattie was a fabulous cook and enjoyed cooking for her family and friends. She enjoyed traveling to new places and meeting new people. She loved her church and her community. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. She will be truly missed by all who's lived she has touched. Mattie is survived by her daughter, Peggy Hutson and husband, Luther, of Winston Salem; her sons, Charles Holmes, Jr., and wife, Rebecca, of Emerald Isle, and Martin Holmes, of Columbia, SC; her brother, Russell Griffin, of Red Oak; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A Graveside Service will be held on Monday, August 9, 2021 at 11:00 AM at Pineview Cemetery with Rev. Charles Taylor officiating. A visitation with the family will follow the service at the graveside. Flowers are welcome.   1. Marty, we are so very sorry for your loss. Your mother was a precious gem and loved by many. Keeping you and your family close in prayer.

  2. Chuck, Marty, Peggy, and family, Robert and I were saddened to learn of Mattie’s passing. She was such a good neighbor and friend to us on Fairway Terrace. She and Dutch readily welcomed us to the neighborhood. She was a great cook. We enjoyed her chicken salad many times. So sweet of her to share her delicious treat with us.
