WILLIAMSBURG, V.A. – Milton Brice Joyner, 89, passed away Monday, November 18th with his daughters by his side. He was born December 1, 1934, in Rocky Mount, and was the son of the late Charlie Dawes Joyner and Della Mae Lindsey Joyner. He was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene E Joyner of 44 years.

You could find Milton in a deer stand, fishing in a farm pond or in the garden.  Spending time in the woods was his love.  Cutting grass, working on cars, or building and welding anything he needed brought him joy.  He also was famous for his pig pickin’s, chicken cooking and feeding many friends and family.  Although Milton was an avid outdoorsman, he was not afraid of the dance floor.  He always kept the party going.  Milton was known for his hard work and commitment to his family.  His girls were always in his shadow whether up a tree or under a car.  He started working at a young age and spent over 20 years at Rocky Mount Mills, retiring from CSX Transportation in 2000 after 30 years. Granddaddy/Papa loved spending time and creating memories with his grandchildren. “Uncle Milton” shared his passion and knowledge with all those around him and is loved by many.

Milton is survived by his daughters, Mitzi J Koontz and husband, Ted, of High Point, NC, Regina J Popelars and husband, Mike, of Williamsburg, VA. Along with his three grandchildren, Mya Koontz, Zoe and Eli Popelars; his sister, Effie Cooley of Rocky Mount, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his sisters Thelma Langley, Senora Hayes, Ora Aycock, Odessa Woodcock, Christine Morris, Lois Taylor, Lousie Williams and brothers, Oliver “Cub” Joyner, Carl Lee Joyner, and Junior Joyner.

I didn’t know about hunting until I meet Milton, but he welcomed me in and always treated me like a son. I will never forget all the things I learned from him and hope to pass his knowledge of everything along. I have so many good memories and I will miss him tremendously.
