ROCKY MOUNT – Miriam Hayes “Sue”, age 87, passed away on Sunday, April 6, 2025. Born in Nash County, NC on December 16, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Cleo Maude Collins. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Ray Hayes, and brother, Alton Viverette.
Sue was a steadfast Christian and was a faithful member of Englewood Baptist Church until her failing health. Sue also possessed a deep affection for all creatures great and small, cherishing the companionship and showering special love upon her “granddogs”. But, her heart truly blossomed with the arrival of her granddaughter, Kristen, whom she considered her greatest gift in life.
For a significant part of her working life, Sue dedicated herself to the security team at Nash General Hospital. There, she was more than just a security officer; her warm smile and friendly demeanor allowed her to connect with countless patients, visitors, and staff, leaving a lasting positive impression on many. Sue also enjoyed her work at the Cheese Store in Tarrytown Mall, where her pleasant personality made her a favorite among customers.
Sue will be remembered for her kind spirit, her love for her family and pets, and her ability to connect with people from all walks of life. She was loved and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Sue is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth Holt (Mike) and Katherine Abel (Buck); and her granddaughter, Kristen Abel (Trey Perry).

Miss Sue was a bit of sunshine at Nash General at all times. I was surprised to see her at Spring Arbor and at the facility by the Tar River. But she and I recognized each other, even when we couldn’t get the names out quickly. We remembered the work and companionship at Nash General. Bless y’all.
