ROCKY MOUNT – Nelson W. Jeans, age 96, passed away on Wednesday, March 5, 2025.  Born in Franklin County, NC on June 30, 1928, he was the son of the late Athe Morris Jeans and Lola Privette Jeans. He was also preceded in death by his first wife of 59 years, Lois Inscoe Jeans; his sons, Dan Jeans, and Steven Jeans; his grandson, Braxton Jeans; and several brothers and sisters.

Nelson lived a life filled with love, generosity, and unwavering faith. He was a steadfast Christian and lifetime member of Marvin United Methodist Church, where Nelson served faithfully for many years, before finding a second church home at Dortches Baptist Church. His dedication to his church families was evident in his tireless efforts to assist with any need, from minor repairs to larger projects. Nelson was a true handyman, always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.

Nelson found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was an avid fisherman and had a love for ducks and lighthouses. Nelson possessed a green thumb and took great pride in his yard, where he spent countless hours planting and tending to his beloved flowers. Nelson also enjoyed travelling with his late wife throughout the United States. Some of their favorite times included looking up places they haven’t been in the NC State Magazine and going to visit.

Above all, Nelson will be remembered for his boundless kindness and genuine love for everyone he encountered. He had a heart that embraced all, and his warm smile and gentle demeanor left a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to know him. Nelson truly loved everything and everyone.

Nelson is survived by his loving and inseparable wife of 4 years, Barbara Womble Jeans; son, Bruce Jeans; grandchildren, Chrystal Bell, Nicholas Cottle, Steven Clark Jeans (Cassie); great grandchildren, Cameron Bell (Amber), McKenzie Bell, Steven Clark Jeans, Jr., Kelsie Jeans, Nelson Jeans, Abigail Bell, Lea Cottle, Justin Raynor; great great grandchild, Carter Bell; sister, Daphine “Carol” Castelluzzo, and many nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Dortches Baptist Church, 4776 Dortches Blvd. Rocky Mount, NC 27804.with Pastor Rick Gaskins officiating. A visitation will be from 10:00 AM to 10:45AM prior to the service in the sanctuary of Dortches Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Nelson’s memory to Dortches Baptist Church.

  1. Our deepest condolences to my Aunt Barbara Womble Jeans and the Jeans family. Nelson was a very special man and was loved by many who knew him!

  2. Nelson and Lois were good friends of my parents, Joe and Catherine. Many a Friday or Saturday night they played canasta at the Jeans’ home on Hill Street There were many cookouts up at Lake Gaston hosted by Lois & Nelson that were always enjoyable with good food, boat rides, conversations and many more memories.
    Nelson was an excellent handyman and he helped me several times after the passing of my father. If he could not do it, he knew someone who could.
    Many memories with the Jeans’, Murray and Coats families.
    Rest in peace in your new Heavenly Home Nelson.

  3. I remember Nelson from working at the post office in the late eighties. He was such a kind and caring person. I have a wooden duck mobile hanging in my sunroom that Nelson gave me. May he rest in peace.
