Nashville - Oscar Lee Turner, age 84, passed away on Thursday, July 26, 2018 at Nash General. Born in Edgecombe County, NC on October 26, 1933, he was the son of the late Oscar Dean and Leona Turner. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Betty Ruth Medlin Turner.
Oscar leaves behind to cherish his memory, his children, Deborah Pappas and husband, Louis, Libby Turner, John and wife Patti. He is also survived by grandchildren, Taylor Byrd and husband Caleb, David, as well as cousins and many special friends.
Daddy will be remembered by his family and many friends as a generous, kind hearted man. He loved his family, adored his grandchildren and cherished his friends. Daddy loved the Lord with all his heart and served him faithfully as a bus ministry director, Sunday School teacher, youth director and deacon. He continued his service to the Lord as a faithful prayer warrior.
Daddy served his country in the United States Army, stationed at Sandia Base in Albuquerque, NM as a military policeman. He earned the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the Expert Marksman (Pistol 45) Commedation. He was proud to have served this country. Daddy was an avid outdoors man! He loved hunting and fishing with us and so many friends. He loved cooking for the hunting club at mens church functions and for members of the Carolina Panthers Football Team. He so enjoyed sharing his wealth of knowledge to younger outdoorsmen.
Daddy loved volunteering with the Rocky Mount Chapter of the American Red Cross. He was honored to have spent two tours of duty in New York after the 9/11 attacks as well as being deployed to other disasters across the country.
Daddy was blessed with a great sense of humor. He loved a good joke and so enjoyed playing practical jokes on his family and buddies. He loved getting the last laugh and making others laugh.
Daddys last two years were spent at Autumn Care of Nash. He made many friends while there and very seldom was he found in his room. He was usually in the dining room with “the group”. He always had a kind word for everyone and faithfully encouraged those around him.
Daddy will be sorely missed. He leaves a legacy of loving and serving his Lord, his country, his family, and others.
Well done, thou good and faithful servant!
