Richard Carlyle Cross - "Rick"

ROCKY MOUNT – Rick Cross, age 75, passed away on Wednesday, November 13, 2024. Born in Davidson County, NC on July 1, 1949, he was the son of the late Joseph Harold Cross and Anne Grace Parker. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Yvonne “Sissy” Swiney.

After graduating from NC State University, Rick remained an avid NC State Wolfpack fan and could always be found cheering them on. During his college years, he was an All-ACC fencer and a self-proclaimed track and field legend. Rick went on to serve his country in the United States Army. During his free time, he enjoyed golfing, taking trips to the beach, hunting, and fishing. A man of great faith, he attended West Haven Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed crossword puzzles, science fiction and crime novels, and the best soul and country music ever made. He was a charismatic man with an infectious laugh and an incisive wit. He loved his family and was especially proud of his many grandchildren.

Rick is survived by his wife, Linda Cross; daughter, Jeniffer Cross; sons and daughters-in-law Christopher and Natalie Cross, Samuel and Christine Cross, James and Crystal Cross; grandchildren Eli, Lucas, Jordan, Quinn, Jack, Logan, Aurora, Gunner, and Wyatt; siblings and spouses Joe and Wanda Cross, Garland Swiney, Tim and Druce Smith, Ginger and Todd Webber, Patrick and Ame Cross; and cousin Pat and Mike Ledford.

A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at 1:00 PM in the Chapel of Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Services with Pastor Jason Pierce officiating. The family will receive friends and relatives on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM at Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Services.

  1. I am sending prayers and love to the Cross family and friends. Rick will be sadly missed by all. May he rest in eternal peace.

  2. I’m sure others from Mallinckrodt will also sign, but let me say that it was an absolute pleasure to work with Rick over the last several years. He was an intelligent, hardworking and outgoing guy who fit in perfectly with our group and helped us immensely on multiple projects. We will all miss seeing him on site, and our condolences go out to the family.

  3. He was a rare and unique combination of electrical contractor and engineer. More importantly, he was an amazing human being. I was blessed to call him my friend. My condolences to Rick’s wife and all his family on their loss.
