Tassie Ree Langley

SHARPSBURG - Tassie Ree Langley, 90 passed away Thursday, August 11, 2016 at Nash General Hospital. She was born May 18, 1926 in Nash County to the late German Datice and Mabel Batts Langley. Tassie was a long time educator and entrepreneur. She attended and graduated from Coopers school, received her B.A. degree from Atlantic Christian College (Barton) and her Masters degree in English and Reading with special attention to Psychology from Columbia University in New York. Tassies teaching career started at Four Oaks High School. Upon graduation from Columbia University, she decided to remain in New York and began teaching at Rye High School in Rye, NY; her career also led her to teach at the University of Connecticut. Tassie was recruited to teach English at NC Wesleyan College. She later taught in the English department at Atlantic Christian College where she taught English and Reading and fulfilled the role of Guidance Counselor. After leaving ACC she opened a private reading school in Sharpsburg, touching the lives of many children ages 6 through the teen years. Her career led her to become Headmistress in the opening of N.E.W. Academy in Sharpsburg. After announcing her “retirement” she continued with her reading school, owned, and operated Langley Realty Company and Mobile Plaza, Mobile Home Park. As a conservative political activist, she became involved in working for many state and national candidates. Tassie became a candidate for the state house of representatives for the Nash and Edgecombe counties. She served one term as Mayor of Sharpsburg. Tassie, though she had no biological children, thought of all the children whose lives she had touched with fondness. She frequently encountered ones who remarked as how she helped them with their education. In 1999, she funded an academic scholarship at Nash Community College. Each year a student benefits from this scholarship, which helps, further their education. Tassie was a long time member of the Altrusa Club of Rocky Mount where she made many friends and enjoyed her many traveling adventures. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Rocky Mount. When she became physically unable to attend, she was never forgotten by the laity and ministers for eight years while a resident of Breckenridge Assisted Living. She thoroughly enjoyed their regular visits and weekly sermons on cd. She loved the staff at Breckenridge Assisted Living in Rocky Mount and came to think of it as her home. Tassie was the tenth of fourteen children. Her parents and nine of her siblings preceded her in death. She is survived by three sisters, Edith Strickland of Rocky Mount, Janie Leegins (Bill) of Wilson and Jackie L. Barnes (Don) of Goldsboro and one brother Wiley F. Langley (Georgia) of Holden Beach. Her extended family includes many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews. Tassie never met a challenge she did not see as an opportunity to conquer. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Tassie Ree Langley Scholarship Fund at Nash Community College, 522 N. A visitation will be held from 2:00 until 3:00pm on Monday, August 15, with the funeral service beginning at 3:00pm in the chapel of Johnson Funeral Home, 661 English Road, Rocky Mount, .
